Poster ShopWelcome to uspostershop.com. We have the ultimate list of film posters, pop art posters and everything you need to know about poster art right here at your new favorite poster shop.

The original intention of poster art was to give us access to famous prints at a fraction of the cost. But now it has become an art form unto itself. When you visit a poster shop, you will see rows and rows of celebrity/ pop star images, unique in both positive and negative aspects. Some authorized and some obviously not.
If you are looking to decorate your home with some art, the pop art posters and canvas may be exactly what you are looking for. For years they have hung from loft apartments on Park Avenue. Our fascination with pop art shows no sign of subsiding.

Pop art started in London during the mid 50's. But it was America's interpretation that produced the works that we widely recognize today. In 1962 an exhibition took place that was called "New Realists". This exhibition featured an impressive cast: Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Claes Oldenburg, to name a few. These people went on to become leaders of the pop art world and Warhol soon became a household name.

You may not be familiar with Roy Lichtenstein, but you will recognize his classic work. He created comic strip art, known for his iconic images of heartbroken women with thought bubbles expressing their despair. His work was also famous for being comprised of dots.

Pop art has always divided the art community. Some see it as art devoid of technical skill and taste. Others see it as a revolution: recognition of the power of consumer branding and redefining the disposable images that we absorb everyday. Pop art is modern satire, exploitation of our current vulgarity.

The film poster was not designed to become so collectable. When the film poster was in its infancy, it was designed to solely advertise the film and then be passed on to the next theater on the distribution circuit. In the years of the Great Depression, a theater owner would receive 15 cents to return a movie poster to the national exchange. Considering that a loaf of bread was 12 cents at the time, it is easy to see why very few original movie posters from that time exist today. In fact, it is estimated that only 20 copies of movie posters produced during 1930 to 1945 are still with us.

Although these original prints may have sadly disappeared, the movie poster has remained relatively unchanged, at least in its dimensions. The standard movie poster has always been roughly 27 inches by 40 inches and it is still the same today. Much can be said about the movie poster. Done well it can portray the style and essence of a film and get moviegoers on to the seats. It can even become an image that we instantly recognize. For example, the Jaws movie poster, the Aliens movie poster, the list goes on and on.
